Are You Living With Bell’s Palsy?
— May 2025 —

Did you know that physical therapy has been proven effective in treating various health conditions, including Bell’s Palsy? Bell’s Palsy is a condition that results in the sudden weakness of your facial muscles, leading to a temporary but potentially drastic change in your facial appearance.
It is estimated that as many as 40,000 Americans are diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy yearly. This condition, which affects people of all ages, often surfaces between the ages of 15 to 60. Its severity varies among individuals, some experiencing mild weakness and others suffering from total paralysis. Regardless of the severity, Bell’s Palsy can significantly hinder daily activities like eating, drinking, and speaking.
Fortunately, here at Preferred Physical Therapy, we can help individuals regain control of their facial muscles, thereby improving their ability to perform daily functions and boosting self-confidence.

Bell’s Palsy: Risk Factors and Causes
Bell’s Palsy is a condition that causes sudden, temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles on one side of your face. Seeing an unfamiliar mirror reflection may seem scary, but there’s hope. Understanding the common risk factors and causes can provide a guiding light on your path to recovery.

Bell’s Palsy occurs when the facial nerve, which controls your facial muscles, becomes inflamed. The most common triggers include:
• Viral Infections: Bell’s Palsy may be linked to viral infections, such as the herpes simplex virus (the same one that causes cold sores and genital herpes), the Epstein-Barr virus (associated with mononucleosis), and influenza.
• Lyme Disease: In areas where Lyme disease, caused by a tick bite, is prevalent, it can be a leading cause of facial Palsy.
However, the precise cause of Bell’s Palsy is often unknown, making it a somewhat mysterious condition in the medical world.
While Bell’s Palsy can occur in anyone, certain groups are at a higher risk; for example, pregnant women, especially those in their third trimester, are more likely to develop Bell’s Palsy. In addition, individuals with diabetes and people with recent upper respiratory infections, such as the flu or a cold, are also more susceptible to the condition.
At Preferred Physical Therapy, our physical therapists can guide you through specialized exercises to improve your muscle strength and coordination, reduce pain, and restore your facial function to the best extent possible.
What to Expect at Your Physical Therapy Sessions
At Preferred Physical Therapy, we offer comprehensive, expert-driven physical therapy solutions for Bell’s Palsy. Our physical therapists perform a detailed evaluation on your initial visit, starting with an in-depth medical history to build a picture of your health. This helps us understand your condition’s unique nature and how it impacts your daily life.
Next, we’ll perform targeted physical examinations to determine the severity of your facial weakness and potential sensory deficits and assess other related issues. This thorough evaluation process allows us to craft a personalized treatment plan that addresses your needs.
Our treatment strategies for Bell’s Palsy incorporate techniques that foster nerve regeneration, improve muscular strength, and enhance overall functionality. We may use the following treatments:
• Neuromuscular Re-education: This therapeutic method of carefully designed exercises encourages your facial muscles to relearn their normal functions.
• Electrical Stimulation Therapy: This non-invasive treatment uses mild electrical currents to stimulate muscles and nerves. This approach can help improve muscle tone and prevent atrophy, all while promoting quicker recovery of your facial nerve.
• Manual Therapy: Another key technique in our toolkit involves the application of hands-on pressure and movement to your affected muscles. This approach encourages better blood flow, reduces pain, and improves flexibility and movement.
Our physical therapists focus on symptomatic relief for Bell’s Palsy and encourage overall well-being. We ensure a comprehensive care approach that includes patient education and preventive measures.
PT will also work with you on improving your posture as well since this can contribute to TMJ-related pain.

Nutrition Tips
For a Healthy Summer

Are You Aware Of The True Importance Of Nutrition?
Your diet affects many aspects of your well-being including your immune system, bone health, muscle function, inflammation, and pain. Conditions including heart disease and diabetes are also impacted by dietary intake in both development as well as management.
As summer approaches, it can be difficult to keep good nutrition at the forefront of your mind, especially with barbeques and cookouts popping up everywhere you look!
If you need some help maintaining a healthy diet this season, take a look at these 6 nutrition tips:
1. Swap Out Snacks For Fruits And Vegetables
Every day, it is recommended that you consume at least 5 portions of a variety of fruits and vegetables. If this sounds challenging, remember that fresh, frozen, canned, dried, or even juiced fruits and veggies are all options.
2. Replace Steak With Fish
Fish is a great source of protein and contains many vitamins and minerals. You should try to incorporate at least 2 servings of fish into your diet every week.
3. Lessen Your Saturated Fat Intake
Did you know that too much saturated fat can raise your blood cholesterol levels, increasing your risk of developing heart disease?

Examples of food rich in saturated fat include:
- fatty cuts of meat
- sausages
- butter
- hard cheeses
- cream
- cakes
- biscuits
4. Cut Down On Sugary Drinks
With the hot weather, it can be almost instinctive to reach for a cold soda out of the cooler. However, drinks high in sugar content can contribute to obesity and tooth decay. Try opting for a cool refreshing glass of water instead, or a tasty fruit smoothie!
5. Make Sure You’re Drinking Enough Water
Proper hydration is always important, but it becomes even more so during those hot summer months. It’s recommended that you drink around 6 to 8 glasses of water a day.
6. Don’t Forget Breakfast
A healthy breakfast should be a part of your daily routine. Eating breakfast sets the tone for your day and gives you the energy you need to make it to lunch!
We hope these tips will help you navigate this season and prioritize your health this summer!

Ingredients
- Ingredients
- 1 large yellow tomato, seeded and diced
- 1 small yellow squash, finely diced
- 1/2 cup chopped fresh chives (about 1 small bunch)
- Finely grated zest of 1 lemon
- 3 tbsps. extra-virgin olive oil

- 12 ounces dried egg fettuccine
- 4 ounces wax beans (about 2 cups), trimmed and halved lengthwise
- 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Toss the tomato, squash, chives, lemon zest and 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large bowl. Season with salt. Sprinkle in half of the goat cheese.
